To my Dearest Friends, part (II)

2018

8, 6"x 3" inkjet prints, an instruction sheet, a letter, 9 stamps, 4 envelopes

Documented Performance

This performance piece was a continuation of To my dearest friends…, 2015. The work explores the relation of outdated technology with digital technology and the role materiality plays in data matter. I went on a 2-week journey disconnecting myself from digital communication. Anyone who contacts me via phone calls, instant messages, emails or social media comments were responded only through a letter(s). The process was documented by photographing the sent letters. As the letters take 3-7 days to be delivered via Canada Post, it explores the themes of moments passing, time and space. The documentation acts as a feedback loop taking the digital data and responding through physical letters, which are transformed back into digital matter through the camera. The work features all 8 letters sent out and the original letter, using the presentation to address the timeline of the work.
